Battery Report | Moss Landing Fire Fall Out
Friday, January 24, 2025

Last Friday, we covered the Moss Landing Fire as one of the largest battery energy storage systems in the world went up in flames Thursday night. The Moss Landing Battery Facility owned by Vistra came online in phases in Monterey, California and currently has a total capacity of 750 MW/3,000MWh. According to reports, Moss 300, the first phase of the project with 300 MW of capacity, was the portion that caught fire. A week later, the fire is out and damage is being assessed, but questions around the source and potential air quality concerns remain. It’s unclear how long the battery will be offline, but an investigation and repairs will need to be completed first. PG&E’s Elkhorn battery, which caught fire in 2022, is located on the same site and is also offline due to the incident. (For more on the 2022 fire, you can read our coverage of it here.) The Elkhorn battery’s capacity is 182.5 MW. The figure below shows total battery outages in megawatts from the CAISO 1515 report. Values in the ‘Curtailed’ column show the total capacity of units offline, while the delta shows the change day-on-day. Last Friday, outages jumped over 0.9 GW due to the fire. For much of this week, including today, total battery outages have been over a gigawatt. Note this includes outages for both NP15 and SP15. Elkhorn and Moss Landing are in NP15.
