Each year as renewable expansion continues in CAISO and other markets, it seems as if the shoulder season is spreading further and further earlier into the winter. We can see this as prices fall off from the winter strength more quickly and renewable supply swells leading to oversupply and curtailments picking up even during February. This was the case this past February as well. On the demand side, things within CAISO were within the normal range of outcomes; system load averaged 23.3 GW for the month, sitting squarely between the values from February of 2022 and 2023. Apart from a brief period a third of the way into the month, California temperatures were normal or slightly above normal, warming a bit more during the final week of February.
