The month of July has been challenging in Western Canada, due to the raging wildfires that continue to put Alberta and British Columbia provinces in great danger. Following a mild/dry winter season, the wildfires started burning early in the year and spread faster as we rolled into summer. Containing such fires has been tough considering the long heat waves that both Alberta and BC have experienced so far. The number of wildfires categorized as “out-of-control” grows at an alarming rate when temperatures rise above-normal. The impact to the energy grid can be seen in the natural gas space as disruptions to both supply and demand has been noted in the Canadian Sub-Package we offer as part of the EnergyGPS North American Power and Natural Gas Enterprise product offering. In this article, we will focus on the supply and demand conditions in Alberta during this month of July 2024. The figure below shows the actual temperatures in Alberta in the first pane and the difference from normal degrees (DFN) in the bottom pane.
