Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in quantitative or critical thinking major with computer science/math emphasis.
  • High degree of fluency in math, statistics, and quantitative analysis as demonstrated through strong grades in higher level math and data analysis classes.
  • Superior ability to handle multiple projects at one time and be very results oriented.
  • Significant experience with at least two of the following: Excel (VBA), SQL, Python, Tableau, R, Monte Carlo modeling, machine learning / AI.
  • Three years of relevant experience in energy or related field with practical, hands-on knowledge of data analysis and modeling.

The Role:

An Associate performs a variety of analytical and technical functions related to data extraction, data analysis, model development, report generation, and market analysis to support our product and consulting businesses.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and Modify Queries to Extract Data from Database
    • Develop and modify SQL code to extract data from database into Excel, Tableau, and other applications.
    • Understand SQL data tables and structure to efficiently extract data and integrate multiple datasets.
    • Identify, evaluate, and resolve data quality issues.
  • Create Data Visualizations and Develop Insights
    • Transform data into graphics that reveal analytical insights.
    • Tell the analytical story through easily understood graphs, tables, and images.
    • Communicate results to Energy GPS team and clients.
  • Develop and Maintain Energy Market Models
    • Develop, maintain, and run models to analyze energy markets and risk using Python, Excel, or other relevant tools. Examples of models include:
      • Use and maintain Python-based Monte Carlo model used to analyze wholesale market risk associated with renewable generation resources. 
      • Assist in the development of short-term storage dispatch models using various machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques. 
      • Perform statistical analysis (such as regression) in R or Excel to estimate the energy demand based on econometric models. relationship between electricity, natural gas, and gasoline usage correlated with other variables.
    • Models may require implementation of statistical analysis such as time series or regression-based modeling. Must possess strong understanding of probability, quantitative modeling techniques, statistical methods for data analysis, and the presentation of statistical results.
    • Models must be designed to achieve the following:
      • Documentation – Models must have documentation and comments in the code. Knowledge of industry-standard documentation approaches required.
      • Efficient coding – Models must be designed and coded to be as efficient as possible. Knowledge of parsimonious model and code design is critical for success in this role to ensure model size and run-time are manageable.
      • Flexible models – Models must be easily modified and re-purposed to handle different inputs or to address additional questions. Requires understanding of mathematical first principles which are at the core of the modeling techniques. 
  • Energy Market Research and Writing Reports
    • Requires an understanding of wholesale energy markets and analysis of renewable energy resources within wholesale markets. An understanding of climate and weather and the relationship to energy use is helpful.
    • Must be able to perform independent research, understand the math and the modeling behind the materials that are being researched, and to summarize and present results for internal EGPS work and for third party audiences.
    • Draft reports that are relevant to the portion of projects that you have worked on.
    • Document findings and keep good records so that research can be supported or replicated at a future date.
